Caring for your Carpets

No carpet lasts forever, but you can add years to the life of a good carpet with regular care.

Vacuuming is essential; you should vacuum at least once a week minimum but more would be better.

Foam Spray: For light to medium-soiled carpets, use an aerosol foam spray, scrub with a brush, let dry, and vacuum. May require frequent applications to ensure best results.

Dry Powder: Also for light to medium soil, powder is spread over carpet where it helps to release dirt; which is then vacuumed up.

Wet Shampoo: One of the most widely used home cleaning methods. Used for tougher stains or an overall thorough cleaning. Ask for professional advice before trying this one to avoid leaving detergent in the carpeting.

Steam: Not really steam, but more of a hot detergent. Used for tough stains, this method uses a high pressure spray that gets deep into the fibers. It's a slower process but a more effective method than just vacuuming.

General Tips

As with anything else you own, keeping your floors clean is essential to ensuring that an item will last a long time. Here are some helpful hints.

Keep from walking on floors with shoes, boots, etc.

Vacuum and/or sweep and mop floors often, at least once a week, to help prevent soil build up.

Treat spills and stains immediately to prevent permanent damage.

Give your floors a thorough cleaning every couple of weeks to further eliminate dirt that would otherwise create wear and tear.

Caring for Your Area Rugs

Vacuuming is the best way to remove everyday dirt and dust. Special care should be taken around the fringe area of the rug as it may get caught in the beater bar of the vacuum. You should vacuum at least two to three times a week during the first year to remove excess fuzz.

Braided Rugs

Retain the beauty these fine products by regular vacuuming using the hard surface attachment.

Remove spots with any dry cleaning fluid.

Periodic professional dry cleaning is recommended.

Accessory products may be washed, cold water, laid flat to dry.

Wool Rugs

Natural wool sheds liquid spills, so quick action offers the chance of preventing a stain.

Never rub a spill. You will only force the spill deeper into the fibers.

Except for latex paint spills, remove any solids using a spoon or blunt knife.

Press absorbent white paper towels gently on the stain absorbing as much moisture as possible.

Try to remove any residual stain with a little lukewarm (not hot) water containing a small amount of carpet shampoo.

If water fails, the next step is solvent. Test the effect on a small unseen portion of the carpet.

Apply solvent directly to stain and work gently with a spoon handle. Blot out quickly with a white paper towel.

Never walk on moist area.

Almost all spills are removed by either dry cleaning fluid (follow manufacturer's instructions) or a simple solution of one teaspoon of mild detergent with one teaspoon of white vinegar in a quart of warm water.

If recommended procedure is not effective call a reputable cleaner.
